IE5/Win: no padding on images

An image with padding (should appear gray) and a green border:

A span with padding (should appear gray) and a green border:

before miao after (with a dimension/inline-block)

Results:

in IE5.5-/Win padding on images is not respected (the same in IE6+ quirks, see: No padding on images in IE/Win quirks.)
in IE5.0/Win padding and border on inline elements are not respected, unless a dimension is set on the element (which makes it to behave as an inline-block, see IE/Win: inline-block and hasLayout.)
